Klimaan: the Stroomplanner

In the Belgian pilot in Otterbeek, energy community Klimaan shows its households when local solar power is plentiful. Households use the Stroomplanner (Dutch for “power planner”) to plan their electricity use for the greenest hours. It’s built on Cofy’s energy directives.

10:00 – 16:00: a good moment to use energy

What it shows

One colour per hour: expected solar power compared with a household’s baseload. Households move large electricity use to the green hours.

Where the data comes from

Elia’s solar forecast for the province of Antwerp, set for a typical 3–4 kWp installation.

Where households see it

On a Smartstuff display (the previous 2 hours, the current hour and the next 5), and in the EnergyID app, which shows more hours ahead.

Reading the colours

Colour Meaning Forecast solar output For a 3–4 kWp installation
Dark green Well above baseload: best for large use 40% or more about 1.5 kW or more
Light green Above baseload: a relatively good moment below 40% up to about 1.5 kW
Grey Around baseload below 12% up to about 0.5 kW
Orange Lower than baseload below 3% up to about 0.1 kW
Red No solar production 0% 0 kW

Forecast solar output is the share of the solar production in the province of Antwerp that Elia expects to be active.

Light green is set low on purpose, so cloudy and winter days still show their better hours. For large consumption, households aim for dark green. Every home gets the same regional signal: not exact for each roof, but a good indication.

What to expect through the year

Average hours per day in each colour, calculated by EnergyID on the previous year. In winter, households see mainly grey, with the occasional light-green hour.
